It’s like life, learning the basics don’t call for relaxation. You have to keep firing in all cylinders, you have to keep learning and breaking more boundaries.

I can’t promise to give you an instant transformational secret that will revolutionize how you look at SEO, but I can categorically say that you will learn the details of what will push you to become better at it.

One of the greatest things I will teach you is how to maximize your effort without compromising quality.

Although SEO is an integral aspect of digital marketing, it is not the ultimate solution. When you get involved in it, you will understand the long processes involved.

And you know how fulfilling it is to maximize time.

I am very much interested in reliable “hacks” that can help you achieve more by reducing the amount of time it takes you to accomplish a task.

Hey, I don’t mean insidious hacks. I’m talking about tricks that can help you save time.

In simple term: Google.

Google is not just the most popular and widely used search engine, it is also the most reliable and most of your customers will come across your business through this search engine. That being said, understanding how Google operates is not a negotiable option for a serious SEO. You must learn every detail of their processes.

You would be surprised to hear that there are SEOs who could recite, without flinching, the most recent algorithm updates of Google, but have not explored Google well enough to use it effectively. Funny, right?

Using search operators have proven to be a reliable means of maximizing the time you spend on Google for better results. The sweetest part is: It’s very easy.

It is not an exclusive reserve of SEOs. You can learn it and apply it to your day-to-day work.

What are search operators?

According to Google, search operators are “symbols or words in your search to make your search results more precise.”

Search operators play a vital role in coding. They are easy routes to getting better results.

Search operators command Google to filter your result in a specific way.

Rather than get stuck with piles of unrelated pages, your results produce relevant pages that reflect exactly what you need.

Yes, I know you have to use them the correct way. And there is unlimited information to that regard.

I will teach how to go about it.

1. Go for every result

Sometimes you may need to get all the results available without filtering it. To do that, you just do the normal search:

2. Search exact matches

Let us assume that you are searching for infographics that discuss content marketing.

The first thing that will come to your mind might be to use the search query “content marketing infographic.” Once you Google that, this is what pops up:

It is very obvious that some of the results are not exactly what you are looking for.

“Video marketing” doesn’t even appear on the third result, although the terms “video” and “marketing” are featured on it.

Google wouldn’t take your search query seriously if you are not specific about your search terms.

For better targeting, you can go the quotation marks way. When you put some specific words or phrase in quotation marks, you are requesting that Google returns only results that match those words or phrase.

Let’s Google this:

With this, Google will display results that have my exact phrase “video marketing.”

3. Take off the words

Google is notorious for providing search results you are not interested in.

Let’s assume you are researching on “email marketing” with the intention of picking up more advanced topics. You will encounter the problem of coming across results that talk about strategies for beginners.

At this point, you can introduce a hyphen (-) to demarcate words from the result. Let’s try it with “strategy”.

This will help Google not feed you with content marketing strategies results.

4. Take off multiple words

This technique comes in handy when you need to exclude more than one word. To use the exclude search operator, ensure there is consistent space in between the excluded words.

5. Take off the exact match phrases

If you are not satisfied with the results you have, you may need to command Google to take off the entire phrases that perfectly match the phrase you specified.

This technique is a combination of the exclusion search operators and the exact match.

While the hyphen (-) is a mark of exclusion, the quotation marks around the phrase stands as a command to Google to exclude the whole phrase and not just the first word.

This is what it looks like:

This sends a command to Google to exclude your specified phrase in between the quotation marks.

6. Exclude multiple phrases

This is widely considered the perfect exclusion operator.

With this you can exclude multiple phrases. It’s similar to excluding multiple words.

For better result simply use the hyphen (-) and quotation marks for as many phrases as you want.

Here’s an example:

7. Apply an OR directive

You can still control your results and command Google to search either of two keywords or phrases. You can achieve this by using the OR command.

This would command Google to display results with either A or B. Separate your search keywords with capital letter OR like this:

I may need to inform you that the OR directive will search the word before it and the one after it.

You can also try the pipe symbol technique (|) instead of using the OR.

8. Use specified OR commands

All of the previous search operators that we have discussed can guide you through the process of modifying your OR searches.

This comes in handy when you want to use an OR search with particular phrases:

You will be provided with results that include either of the two exact phrases you specified: “content marketing” or “email marketing.”

9. Use wildcards to get more results

If you are not satisfied with the result from your previous search and want to get more matches, you can try the wildcard operator. It is represented by the symbol, asterisk (*).

When the wildcard is applied in a phrase, all the variations of that phrase would come with the result.

For instance, when researching on chicken and chips, you could either use and or &

So this search query would return results with both:

10. Include words

Do you know that just the same way you can exclude words, you can also include them?

While surfing for information on a particular niche topic, you may want to ensure that some keywords are included, the plus sign is a sure way of achieving it.

11. Include phrases

You can include the entire phrases with the combinations of quotation marks and the plus sign:

This may look ordinary, but it will help Google target most relevant contents you need.

12. Find words near each other

This is neat search operator that exists but people tend to ignore. I bet most people don’t even know it exists. It’s called the AROUND(X) operator.

With this operator, your results would appear with your search terms close to each other.

The X represents the number of words that will separate the two terms.

So for example, if you put in this query:

You will end up with results where “content marketing” is 5 words away from “video”. It is most effective for connecting two topics.

13. Look for phrases near each other

The AROUND(X) operator can also be applied when you need to employ quotes to find phrases near each other:

14. Find synonyms

This is another interesting way to search for results that are all related to what you’re looking for.

To find words synonymous to a particular word, all you need to do is have a tilde (~) appear before the specified word.

The words “holiday ~decorations” would provide results with “décor” as the synonym

15. Search specific sites

You can restrict your results to a particular site. With Google search operators, it is very possible

Type “site:” and then the name of the site you want to target. It should look like this:

It is most effective when used with keywords or other search operators.

It works with any search operator and your keywords could come before or after the search operator. This technique allows access into a site’s index and for SEO, this can be extremely valuable.

16. Search connected sites

In some cases you may need to extract information from sites that are related to sites you already know. That’s when the related: operator comes in handy

Write related: followed by the website domain name:

17. Get information about sites

In some cases, you need to extract information about a site.

Typing the instruction info: before a URL, you would be commanding Google to feed you with information about the website.

18. See cached versions

Some day you might have a need for an older version of a website and in such days, Google would be your reliable friend.

You just need to learn how to use the cache: operator

19. Search particular domain types

Have you forgotten site: operator? Well, you better not, because you can equally use it to search specific types of domains.

If you’re searching for only .biz sites, you can use:

Combining it with keywords and/or other operators is equally possible:

20. Search multiple specific domain types

Remember the OR command we discussed earlier? With it you can search for more than one type of domain. Use parentheses to enclose the OR command and its keywords:

21. Search hashtags

This is particularly useful when planning a social media campaign. Explore Google’s interesting ability to display hashtags from social media networks.

Make sure to place the symbol (#) immediately before the phrase or keyword of your choice.

22. Search using a variety of numbers

You can command Google to display results within the range of your specified number. You can put periods (..) in between your specified minimum and maximum values.

Google will respond by displaying results that fall in between those two specified values.

This operator is most convenient when you are doing a product research. You can streamline your search in a way that only products within a particular price range show up.

23. Look for keywords within page titles

With the intitle: operator, your results will come with page titles that have a particular keyword in them. You can do this by introducing the operator just before the specified keyword.

The allintitle: operator gives you the benefit of searching for titles that contain certain phrases.

This a picture-centric technique. Just like the last two operators we discussed, the intext: operator will display results that have a specific keyword in the text of the page.

If you are constantly searching for word contents or blog posts, you should know this operator like the back of your palm.

26. Find phrases in page text

If you followed us through the previous operator, you would definitely know what this does.

Just like the allintitle: operator, allintext: will help you with phrases within a page text.

27. Find keywords in anchor texts

This one has great SEO value.

With this operator, you can have Google produce results that have a particular keyword in the anchor text.

With this operator, you can have Google produce results that have a particular phrase in the anchor text.

29. Find keywords in URLs

This works well for niche based URLs, especially when you need to find pages that are particularly about a specific topic.

You can put this to use in both situations. By specifying a keyword, inurl: will produce results with that particular keyword contained in the URL.

This one is more effective than the previous one. The allinurl: operator displays entire phrases in URLs:

There is so much to be said about this search operator and contents written by influencers. Personally, I prefer to link to it in my articles.

Finding contents written by specific people is easy if you know your way around the technique.

You can use the allinpostauthor: operator when searching for an author you know the name.

Location based search is the way to go if you are doing local SEO. .

When you are targeting an audience located in the same geographic location, location specific search comes in handy.

Simply use the loc: operator together with a certain location you intend to target:

To crawl through the subdomain of any site, you need the inurl: and site: operators to effectively crawl your targeted website and avoid specific subdomains:

Hello! Now you can run a check to find out the pages of a website that are not secure:

Using define: operator helps you with the definition of any word:

Use the daterange: operator when you need your results to be narrowed down to a certain range of dates that you specify.

The only down side to it is that the operator works with the lesser-known Julian format rather than the Gregorian calendar that most of the world uses.

This comes in handy when you are searching for a certain document format, like PDF and XLS:

38. Find unnecessary text files

You don’t want to have a website that is robust with unnecessary files that just idly sit around and take up relevant space on your website. To trace such files, try and run this search:

Enterprising websites are usually cloned. And if you have one, you may need to investigate sites that share the same domain name as yours, though with a different TLD:

  • Ads are paid advertising listings that appear at the top of a Google search page while free listings are generated by organic traffic and appear below the paid Ad listings.
  • Ads cost money and receive 30% of the traffic while organic listings receive 70% percent of the traffic and are free.

With that I mind, as a website owner, where would you rather be? I’m guessing you’d prefer to be in the free listings that receive most traffic.

However, the problem with ranking organically is that it’s not easy. But in this post I’m going to show you steps you can take to improve your search engine rankings organically when you have no money.

TIP 1: Start Doing Roundup Posts

  • Step 1: The first thing you need to do is start doing roundup posts. In your website, make sure there’s a blog. If you don’t have one, go to wordpress.com and add a blog to your site.
  • Step 2: Interview experts/top influencers within your niche. For example, if you are in the internet marketing industry, you can search for top marketers, top marketer influencers, top SEOs, etc and create a list. It’s easy to find these people.

You only need to visit their blogs and reach out to them through the contacts they’ve provided in their websites, preferably via email. In your email you could say;

Since not every roundup is named ‘link roundup’, it can be difficult to find roundups. There are 3 distinct ways we can prospect for them.

However, before we even get into how to find them it is important to get organized first, especially if you are building links for clients or planning to reach out to many bloggers.

Google Sheets is easy to share, allows for team collaboration and runs smoothly on any computer. You need to keep a record of the following information:

  • Site URL
  • Blogger’s name
  • Blogger’s contact information
  • Name of the roundup

You’ll see why you need this information later in the article.

Using search engine operators to spot roundup opportunities

This is the best way to find quality outreach opportunities. Search engine operators are used to pull out specific information from Yahoo, Duck Duck Go, Google and Bing. Below are some of the operators you can use.

All you need to do is combine the operators with your keyword. In our case, our key word is ‘digital marketing’.

  • NB: Remember to test the operators in all search engines, not just in Google.

The process can take up a lot of your time. Therefore, if you can get a virtual assistant to help you with this task, you can move a lot faster. There are software that can help you with the task but they are not as effective as humans.

We need use search engines filters to ensure the results we get are recent.

Focus only on websites that are actively posting roundups. Otherwise, it will be a waste of your time. Filters will help you do that.

The other important thing is to look at the titles and meta descriptions, not all results listed will be link roundups. Some will be posts about link roundups, like the ones marked with an X in the image below.

Once the first two criteria have been met, the next thing you need to do is ensure they are linking to external posts and not internal posts. Some websites do weekly or monthly roundups of their top content. Such sites should be avoided.

Finding contact information

After you find a good opportunity, you’ll want to get their contact information. Most websites will have an author who controls the roundup’s content. If we can find their contact details, we can contact them directly.

Some posts will have the authors name at the top or bottom of the post. In the example below, the authors are listed at the bottom.

There are several ways we can reach out to the authors, each with a varying success level. The first method has a high success chance while the last has a low chance.

Method 1: Getting their personal email address

If we can get their names and personal email, we can send them personalized outreach emails that are likely to get a response.

You can use the findanyemail tool to get their email address.

Process: Get the author’s and company names from the website’s ‘about us’ or ‘contact us’ pages and run this information through the tool.

The tool does not always bring back results, therefore, if you fail to get their email, proceed to the next method.

Tools to find direct emails:

  • Method 2: Find their LinkedIn

Finding a person on LinkedIn accomplishes two things:

  1. Shows you are not a spammer and makes a personalized impression on them
  2. Sends personalized inbox messages that are also pushed to their email

Process: Once you get their name and company name, input this information on Google and include the name ‘LinkedIn’. If this does not bring back results, search LinkedIn directly.

If nothing yields, proceed to the next method.  

Method 3: Find their personal Facebook account

You can find them on Facebook using the following process:

  1. Get the company and author names from the ‘contact’ and ‘about us’ pages
  2. Search Google for ‘their name + Facebook + website name
  3. Search Facebook directly

Method 4: Find them on Twitter

Contacting them via Twitter is a bit of a challenge because they have to follow you back for you to be able to send them a direct message. There is a high chance that someone will read a Twitter message since most people rarely use Twitter’s messaging feature getting one is rare and a surprise.

To get them on twitter:

  1. Get the author’s name and website name from their about us and contact pages
  2. Search Google for ‘their name + Twitter + website name’
  3. Search Twitter directly

5: Use their contact page

Use their contact page as the last option because they don’t give you the impression of who will read your message or where it will be sent.

How to properly pitch link round ups

The prospecting phase is the most challenging and time consuming one. Pitching all your prospects takes less than an hour.

There are quality tools that can help you speed up the pitching process.

However, I recommend using Gmail, mainly because it automates the tedious process of outreaching manually and still allows for in-depth personalization.

Here’s an example of a pitch I use:

Here are a few key points to consider when writing your pitch:

  • Use the Subject line to tell inform bloggers WHY you are emailing them.
  • Use their name to customize the email.
  • Keep the body of the email short and to the point.
  • Personalize the email further using the name of their roundup post
  • Give a BRIEF overview of your post.
  • Share your post’s link

 

TIP 2: Use SEO Book Keyword Density Tool to Analyze Your Competitors

There is a free keyword density tool by seo book that lets you look up keywords that your competitors are using on their website. To view the keywords that your competitors are using follow these steps:

  1. Type in the specific keyword you want to rank for in Google’s search box.
  2. Get all the URLs of the websites that are currently ranking on page one of Google for that keyword. For example, if the keyword we want to rank for is ‘digital marketing’ we’ll get the following results:

Step 3: Open the free seo book keyword density tool and copy paste the URLs you want to analyze.

STEP 4: Click on the submit button to get all the key phrases that your competitor is using on their website.

This tool shows you all the keywords and phrases that a particular webpage is using as well as their density. The more a website uses a specific phrase the more it tells Google that that’s what the webpage is about. I know you may already be familiar with keyword density.

I’m not saying that you should fill your content with certain keywords (that would be unethical), but instead be thorough. Ensure that you use some/most of the keywords used by your competitors.

The more thorough you appear to be in Google’s eyes, the higher you will rank, even if you have less backlinks or social shares than someone else. Google wants to rank the page that provides most value to its users.

Therefore, if you use some of the keywords used by your top competitors, you’re thorough and are more in-depth than everyone else, you will notice that your rankings will gradually improve.

Tip 3: Google Key Phrases You Want to Rank for Organically

Assuming you are in the hotel industry and want to rank for the phrase ‘cheap hotels in Miami’ you will need to do the following to increase your chances of getting more organic clicks.

  • Step 1: search for the key phrase you want to rank for in Google. In our case, we get the following Google results:

When you look at the paid listings, you will notice is that Google Ad Words, which is the paid version, bases the rankings of their paid listings based on how much you can pay per click and how appealing your Ad copy is.

Therefore, the more appealing the Ad copy is, the more the clicks it will get. In our list above, ‘Cheap Hotels in Miami’ is more appealing than ‘Miami Beach Resort $23Day’, thus it is ranked higher.

The same applies to organic listings. For organic listings, you don’t have to pay but the more appealing your title and meta description is to Google, the more clicks you are going to get and consequently the higher you will rank. Below are the listings for the webpages that are ranking organically for the same search result.

You will notice that listings that have better titles and better meta descriptions rank higher. If Google notices that a webpage listed as number five is receiving more clicks than the one they’ve put in first place, they are going to push the one ranked fifth to the top position.

To gain a better competitive edge, ensure that your title tag and meta description is better and more appealing than that of your competitors. If you don’t know how, you can seek the help of a webmaster or learn how to do it yourself. There are lots of resources on Google on how to do that.

Tips on how to make your Title tag more appealing:

  • Include the year within your Title tag – for example , Cheap hotels in Miami in 2017
  • Use adjectives- adjectives make people want to click on your title
  • Using words like: fast, free, now, instant, etc. also increase the number of clicks

It is thus important to note that the vast majority of users will watch your videos through the default 640 x 360 YouTube player size.

By using an image editor, the image can be down sized to 800 x 531 pixels and its size can also be reduced to 75KB which is about 1/140 the size of its previous size. This means that the image will load a lot faster for website users, and this is important because many studies have shown that you lose customers for every second your customers have to wait for your content to load.

Problem 3. Title and Description Fields

Let us now look at two other fields that need fixing, the title page and the description field.

These fields confuse a lot of people because when you go to insert this image into your post, whatever text you type here doesn’t actually show up on your post. That makes you wonder, what is the purpose of these fields?

The content from these two fields is used in a very specific location in WordPress called the WordPress attachment page. A lot of WordPress users are not familiar with this page because it is not usually very useful for the majority of websites. To get a look at this page you can click the bottom link titled ‘View attachment page

This link usually opens the URL of your WordPress attachment page. Below is an image of how it looks like in the WordPress default theme.

Scattered around the page is the title and description text as well as some other data. The question to ask yourself is, what is this page good for? The answer is… Nothing!

Many WordPress theme designers do not even bother to code this page. The reason is because in the vast majority of web business models, you typically never want a user to land on the attachment page. This is because the page has no navigation, no post content and most importantly there is no ‘BUY button’ on this page.

We want Google to be sending traffic to our actual product post page not our attachment page. We do not want potential customers to land on a page with no action steps on it. For most web business models the attachment page is useless at best, and at worst by utilizing it we are losing money. It is therefore considerable to set WordPress attachment page to no index.

Solution: With this in mind, what do we type in our title and description fields? The answer is… Absolutely Nothing! The website owner doesn’t want a user landing on the attachment page, so there is no reason to type anything into these fields.

Problem 4: Caption Field

The other field is the caption field.

The text in this field is typically rendered directly below the image on your post.

From a SEO perspective, this is important because the search engines will tend to associate the image with any text that is approximate to it, giving special emphasis to the nearest text and page title. From a site user’s perspective, readers have a tendency to read the text that is directly located below an image.

It is commonly stated that image captions are read 300% more than your article body content. You should be aware that what you write in the caption field has a very high probability of being read by your potential customers. Your web visitor might ignore everything else apart from your image caption.

Solution: Use this box to create an appealing and easily digestible descriptive sentence or two.

Problem 5: The Image Alt text Field

When it comes to the image Alt text field, whatever you type here will be used in the infamous, all attribute of the image html tag. Historically, the all attribute has been used to describe the image content to people with vision disability, people who cannot see the image for whatever reason. Since search engines are basically ‘blind’ as well, at least up until the quite recent A.I (Artificial Intelligence) advances, they use this attribute to get an idea of the image content too.

Solution: In this field, it is best to type in a keyword with a phrase that precisely describes the image using about five to ten words or so. As in the example illustrated by the image below, note that the text in this box, might be the kind of phrase that someone might type directly in into Google’s search box. We use a descriptive keyword optimized phrase to let both the search engine robots and the human users know what sort of product we are selling and where to find it on our website.
